The Surrey Society of Magicians first
met on February 21st 1991, as the result of an advert placed in Abra
by John
Field. An overwhelming response showed the clear need for a
new magic club in the Surrey area and within three months the basic aims
and objectives of the Society, including its name, had been agreed.
The founder members were John Anscombe, Julian Bird, Bill Caldwell,
Leslie Cole, George Dallison, Steve Day, Jeff Drayton, John Field, Dean
Forster, Les Jarvis, John Kenton, Brian Lee, John Palfreyman, Tony
Peach, Colin Peters, David Redfearn and John Wilkinson. The Society now
has over fifty active and enthusiastic magicians.
The Society meets twice a month, on the second
and fourth Thursdays, near Epsom, and has enjoyed a programme of events
rivalling the top clubs in the country. One of the main aims of
the club is to develop the performing ability of its members and to this
end many public shows are put on in the Surrey area. The Society
has assisted charities to raise tens of thousands of pounds.
Having benefited from the experience of other
clubs the Society has avoided the pitfalls so often encountered in a
club such as this. As a result the Society is healthy financially
and has an active social as well as magical existence.
The Society's emblem is based upon the heraldic
arms for the County of Surrey. The acorn is apt for showing the steady
but strong growth of what will surely be one of this country's premiere
magic clubs.
